Why won't my car start?
The sound the car makes when you turn the key narrows the cause down significantly before anyone opens the bonnet.
Nothing at all, or a click
Dashboard lights dim or absent, a single click or rapid clicking — this points at the battery or its connections. A battery can pass a quick voltage check and still fail under starting load, so it needs testing properly.
Turns over but doesn't fire
If the engine spins at normal speed but never catches, the battery is probably fine and the issue is on the fuel, ignition or immobiliser side. Common causes include fuel pump problems, crank sensors, glow plugs on a cold diesel, or a security fault.
Starts then dies
This often indicates an immobiliser or fuelling issue and usually leaves a stored fault code, which makes it a straightforward diagnostic job.
