Signs your brakes need replacing

Brakes wear gradually, which is exactly why people miss it. The change happens slowly enough to feel normal until something makes it obvious.

Noise

A light squeal on first use of the day is often just surface rust and clears within a few stops. A consistent squeal, or a metallic grinding, suggests pads are at or past their limit and the discs may be taking damage.

Feel

A pedal that travels further than it used to, feels spongy, or vibrates under braking all point at something worth checking — worn pads, warped discs, fluid condition or a sticking caliper.

A car that pulls to one side when braking usually means one side is doing more work than the other.

Don't wait for the grinding

Replacing pads is routine. Replacing pads plus discs plus a damaged caliper because the pads were left too long is not. An inspection is quick and tells you exactly how much life is left.
