Why is my air conditioning not cold?

Air conditioning loses a little refrigerant every year by design. When it stops blowing cold, though, it's usually one of a small number of causes.

Gradual loss of cooling

If it has faded over a couple of summers, low refrigerant is the likely cause and a regas restores it. If it faded within weeks, there's a leak worth finding first — regassing a leaking system just pays for gas twice.

Weak airflow rather than warm air

If the air is cold but there isn't much of it, the cabin filter is the first thing to check. They block with leaves and dust and are inexpensive to replace.

Nothing at all

No change in engine note when you press the A/C button often means the compressor isn't engaging — a pressure switch, electrical fault or failed compressor. That's a diagnostic job, not a regas.

Smells when it runs

A musty smell is bacteria on the evaporator. An antibacterial treatment plus a new cabin filter usually deals with it.
