What causes uneven tyre wear?
Tyres record what the rest of the car is doing. The wear pattern is often the first evidence of a suspension or alignment problem.
Worn on both edges
Usually under-inflation. The centre of the tread lifts away from the road and the shoulders take the load.
Worn in the centre
Usually over-inflation, with the middle of the tread carrying the car.
Worn on one edge only
This points at alignment or suspension geometry — often after a pothole or kerb impact, or as bushes and joints wear. Replacing the tyre without correcting the cause simply wears out the new one.
Scalloped or patchy wear
Frequently associated with worn dampers letting the wheel bounce rather than staying planted.
