Clunks, creaks and rattles: suspension noises explained
Suspension noises are one of the most common reasons cars come into the workshop, and the type of noise narrows the cause considerably.
Clunk over bumps
A single knock over speed bumps or potholes usually points to worn drop links, anti-roll bar bushes or top mounts. Drop links are the most common and among the cheapest to put right.
Creaking at low speed
Dry or perished rubber bushes creak as they flex, most noticeably on full lock in a car park or over slow undulations.
Knock through the steering
Play felt through the wheel rather than heard through the floor suggests track rod ends, a steering rack or wheel bearings. This group matters more — it affects control, not just comfort.
Wallowing or bouncing
If the car floats after a bump or dives heavily under braking, the dampers are likely tired. Uneven tyre wear often confirms it.
