Signs your clutch is wearing out
Clutches wear gradually, so the change is easy to miss until something obvious happens. There are a few reliable symptoms worth knowing.
Slipping under load
Revs rise but the car doesn't accelerate to match, usually first in a higher gear or going uphill. That's the clearest sign the friction material is worn.
A high biting point
If the clutch now bites near the top of the pedal travel when it used to engage lower down, wear is the usual explanation — though cable and hydraulic adjustment can also be involved.
Judder pulling away
A shudder through the car as you set off can be contamination from an oil leak, a warped plate or worn mounts. Worth investigating, because an oil leak is a separate fault feeding the first one.
Heavy or sinking pedal
A pedal that goes heavy, sticks to the floor or feels spongy points at the release mechanism — master or slave cylinder — rather than the friction plate itself. Different fault, different repair.
