How to prepare your car for winter

Cold weather doesn't create faults so much as expose the ones already there. A short check in autumn saves most of the trouble.

Battery

Cold reduces the power a battery can deliver at exactly the moment the engine needs more to turn over. A battery that was marginal in September is the one that fails in December.

Tyres

Check tread depth and pressures. Grip matters more in the wet and cold than at any other time of year, and pressures drop as temperatures fall.

Visibility and fluids

Top up screenwash with a proper winter mix rather than water, replace tired wiper blades, and check all your lights work.

Coolant and heating

Coolant needs the correct antifreeze concentration. A heater blowing cold or a temperature gauge behaving oddly is worth checking before the frost arrives.
