How to prepare your car for a long journey
Long journeys ask more of a car in a few hours than a month of local driving. Most holiday breakdowns are avoidable.
A week before
If a service is due, get it done before the trip rather than after. Mention the journey — it changes what's worth prioritising.
The day before
Check oil and coolant levels when the engine is cold, check tyre pressures including the spare or repair kit, and adjust pressures if the car will be fully loaded.
Loading
A fully loaded car brakes later and handles differently. If the brakes have felt tired, get them checked first — not at a motorway services.
