Common reasons your car fails to start
No-start jobs cluster around a fairly short list of causes, and they're distinguishable by symptom.
Battery and connections
By far the most common, and often about the terminals or an ageing battery rather than anything dramatic.
Starter motor
A single loud click with healthy dashboard lights, or an intermittent no-start that clears when you try again, points here.
Fuel and ignition
Pumps, crank sensors, glow plugs on diesels and ignition faults on petrol engines all prevent a car that turns over from actually firing.
Security and immobiliser
A failing key, worn barrel or immobiliser fault will stop the car starting even though everything mechanical is fine.
